Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

Crown Law’s Treaty Issues Teams provide advice to the Crown, and represent it in courts and tribunals, in relation to contemporary and historical issues associated with te Tiriti o Waitangi | the Treaty of Waitangi, the Māori-Crown relationship, and related constitutional matters.

We are looking for an experienced legal professional to lead one of our two Treaty Issues Teams as Manager. The role of a Legal Team Manager is to:

• Provide professional leadership to counsel—including allocation of work, coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
• Lead the delivery of legal advice and representation to Ministers and government agencies, including by representing the Crown in litigation before courts and tribunals.
• Work with colleagues in Crown Law and other agencies to identify and manage the Crown’s legal risk.
• Contribute to organisational leadership, including the development and implementation of Crown Law’s strategic direction.

Mōu | About You

This is an exciting role for a senior public lawyer to work with the Deputy Solicitor-General, leaders and lawyers inside and outside Crown Law, counsel, and support staff to represent the Crown’s interests in the Māori–Crown and Treaty relationships. Ideally you would have:

• A deep understanding of current and historical constitutional settings, including te Tiriti | the Treaty and its application to the Crown’s legal rights and obligations.
• A commitment to supporting a strong and enduring Māori-Crown relationship.
• A high level of cultural capability and knowledge of the application of te Tiriti | the Treaty and tikanga, as they apply to law.
• Experience managing a busy legal team with competing priorities, and an interest in organisational leadership.
• The ability to obtain and hold a practicing certificate in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Location: Te Whanganui-a-Tara | Wellington

This role is Wellington based and located next to Wellington bus and train station.

Remuneration and Benefits

• A starting salary range of between $195,538.00 and $224,373.00 with further room to progress. The appointing salary will be based on skills and experience.
• 5 weeks annual leave plus 3 additional leave days (Crown Law days).
